One question. One winner. Gemini, CoPilot, ChatGPT, DeepSeek: who wins?

Welcome to AI Collision 💥,

In today’s collision between AI and our world:

  • CoPilot vs. Gemini vs. ChatGPT vs. DeepSeek
  • It was Albania!
  • Why didn’t the UK sign?

If that’s enough to get the countries in size, read on…

AI Collision 💥

My son was drawing flags on Friday night before bed. He just loves flags and countries of the world. And he’s a smart cookie – he knows all of them. Seriously. All of them.

On this particular evening, we were talking about land size (he is pretty good with that too). But he had forgotten which was the third smallest country starting with the letter A.

He knew that Antigua and Barbuda is the smallest, and that Andorra comes after that. But he just couldn’t quite remember the third.

So, he asked me. I had no idea. I didn’t even know Antigua and Barbuda is the smallest, let alone Andorra the second smallest.

Therefore, I said, “I dunno mate but let’s find out.” Now I could have done a Google search, but it was already well past his bedtime and I had the need for SPEED. So I said, “Why don’t we ask AI?”

He thought that was a good idea too.

I went to CoPilot because I figured that would give me the answer and that would be the end of that. Bedtime for him and Dad can go watch Nosferatu.

Here’s CoPilot’s answer to, “What’s the third smallest country starting with A?”

Err. NO.

For a start, it was wrong with Andorra. And then when pushed on the answer, it gave a completely conflicting answer to that.

So Microsoft’s CoPilot didn’t know.

Let’s ask Google’s Gemini.

We have a new answer here, Armenia.

But I don’t trust it. And neither did my son. In fact, he was pretty confident that it wasn’t Armenia either. And anyway, this said Andorra was smallest, when it’s not.

I also know this because Gemini confirmed it:

If that’s the answer, then why did it put Andorra first?

Gemini cannot be trusted. Gemini, you’re fired!

Surely ChatGPT, the granddaddy of the Ais, will steer us in the right direction.

Well, ChatGPT is much more precise here. It got the first two spot on. But there’s the pesky Armenia again.

My son wasn’t so sure on this. And I knew there would be only one way to truly get the answer…

DEEPSEEK.

Well, well, well. DeepSeek rolls up and smashes the others for six! And a little flair with the answer too. Albania is correct. My son said when he saw it, “Ahh that’s it Dad, it’s Albania, pfft, how’d I forget that!” We double checked it to boot.

I know. How on earth, boy.

However, DeepSeek took a LOT longer to get there. And here’s where it triumphed while the others failed: reasoning.

DeepSeek took 52 seconds to “think” about the answer. And I want to share with you that thinking. It’s long, but I think it’s important to see how the DeepSeek AI processed its thoughts and then reevaluated the position.

This kind of inference is what everyone’s talking about now. Meaning not just the ability to learn data but to think about it, reason, ponder, consider and work through a question. So, here’s what DeepSeek “thought”…

Okay, let’s tackle the question: “What is the third smallest country starting with A?”

First, I need to figure out all the countries that start with the letter A. From the search results, webpage 1 lists countries alphabetically. Under the letter A, the countries are Afghanistan, Aland Islands, Albania, Algeria, American Samoa, Andorra, Angola, Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan. Wait, but some of these might not be sovereign countries. For example, Aland Islands, American Samoa, Anguilla, Aruba are territories, not independent countries. The user is asking for countries, so I should focus on sovereign states.

Looking at webpage 6, which lists countries starting with A, the entries are Algeria, Argentina, Afghanistan, Angola, Australia, Azerbaijan, Austria, Armenia, Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Andorra. That’s 11 countries. These seem to be the sovereign ones. Webpage 8 also mentions countries starting with A: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia. So combining these, the sovereign countries starting with A are: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan. But Australia starts with A, but the user might be considering the common name, which is Australia. Hmm, but maybe some of these are dependent territories. Wait, Antigua and Barbuda is a sovereign country. Okay.

Next step is to find their areas. Let’s check the search results. Webpage 3 has a list of countries by area. Let’s look there. The list from webpage 3 includes Algeria (2,381,740 km²), Argentina (2,766,890 km²), Afghanistan (647,500 km²), Angola (1,246,700 km²), Australia (7,686,850 km²), Azerbaijan (86,600 km²), Austria (83,858 km²), Armenia (29,800 km²), Albania (28,748 km²), Antigua and Barbuda (442 km²), Andorra (468 km²). Wait, but webpage 9 lists Antigua and Barbuda as 442 km² and Andorra as 468 km². However, webpage 7 lists Andorra as 468 km² and Antigua and Barbuda as 442 km². Similarly, webpage 10 mentions Antigua and Barbuda as 442 km².

So arranging the A countries by area from smallest to largest:

1. Andorra (468 km²) 12

2. Antigua and Barbuda (442 km²) 12

3. Albania (28,748 km²)

4. Armenia (29,743 km²)

5. Austria (83,879 km²)

6. Azerbaijan (86,600 km²)

7. Algeria (2,381,740 km²)

8. Angola (1,246,700 km²)

9. Afghanistan (652,860 km²)

10. Argentina (2,736,690 km²)

11. Australia (7,682,300 km²)

Wait, wait. Wait, wait. Wait, in webpage 6, the area for Antigua and Barbuda is 440 km², Andorra is 470 km². So Antigua and Barbuda is smaller than Andorra. But in webpage 9, Antigua and Barbuda is listed as 442 km² and Andorra as 468 km². So Antigua and Barbuda is smaller. But according to webpage 8, the answer given there says “The smallest country beginning with A is Antigua and Barbuda, at only 170 square miles (which converts to about 440 km²).” So according to webpage 8, Antigua and Barbuda is the smallest A country, then Andorra. But in webpage 9’s list, Antigua is 442, Andorra 468. So the order is Antigua and Barbuda, then Andorra, then Albania. Therefore, the third smallest would be Albania.

Wait, but wait. Let me check the areas again. Webpage 6 lists Antigua and Barbuda as 440 km², Andorra as 470 km². Webpage 9 lists Antigua and Barbuda as 442 km², Andorra 468. So Antigua is smaller. Then the order is:

1. Antigua and Barbuda (~440 km²)

2. Andorra (~468 km²)

3. Albania (28,748 km²)

But wait, Albania’s area is way bigger. Then after Antigua and Andorra, the next smallest would be countries like Albania, but wait, wait. Wait, other countries starting with A: Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan. The next ones after Antigua and Andorra would be Albania (28,748 km²), Armenia (29,743 km²), Austria (83,858 km²), etc. So the third smallest country starting with A is Albania.

But wait, webpage 8 says: “The smallest country beginning with A is Antigua and Barbuda, at only 170 square miles.” Then the next would be Andorra, then the third is Albania. Therefore, the answer is Albania as the third smallest country starting with A.

But wait, let’s confirm. Webpage 9’s list of top 100 smallest countries includes Andorra (468 km²) at rank 16 and Antigua and Barbuda (442 km²) at 14. So Antigua is smaller than Andorra. Therefore, the order is:

1. Antigua and Barbuda (442 km²)

2. Andorra (468 km²)

3. Albania (28,748 km²)

Thus, the third smallest country starting with A is Albania. However, wait, in webpage 6, Albania’s area is listed as 27,400 km², which is still way larger than the first two. So yes, Albania is the third smallest. Therefore, the answer should be Albania.

Microsoft = fail. Google = fail. OpenAI = fail. The open source AI out of China that sucked up the learning from these giants, then made itself a better version of them all = success.

Now that’s not to say DeepSeek is the best and will win the AI arms race. I didn’t use Claude, I didn’t try Perplexity. I didn’t look at Meta’s Llama.

But it’s a good indication that if you think that the US has the out and out lead in AI, that’s not entirely true. Yes, US firms will likely roll up DeepSeek into their own AI, which is a good thing. However, it does go to show that at any moment in this AI race, and this AI market, a competitor can come more or less out of nowhere and sweep through them all in the blink of an eye.

That’s exciting because it will mean more opportunity and more ways to profit as the AI revolution takes shape.

  • AI infiltrating the US government. I mean, that’s not really a surprise, is it? This is a very pro-tech establishment. President Trump might be getting older, but he’s not stupid. JD Vance is young and backed heavily by Silicon Valley. David Sacks, the crypto and AI “czar”, is all over it too. But how it shapes the policy and government, that’s a question we won’t have the answer to for some time.
  • Good question: why won’t the US and UK sign this AI pact with the rest of the world? I can see why the US won’t, but is the UK just sucking up to its bully? Or is there a position of power that we aren’t fully aware of yet?

So my instincts to double check data thrown up by AI are nowhere near as paranoid as I thought it might be. I noticed that some of the research results that co pilot gave me about wind turbines was biased and heavily downplayed the ongoing maintenance and running costs. Plus even with some strong prompting it avoided the backup diesel generators, battery storage costs and lack of grid connections that plagues many wind farms. Then again I suppose it is a case of garbage in, garbage out. Maybe AI is far bigger on promises than on actual delivery and all the money being sunk into it will end up vanishing the same way investment in technology did in 2000.

Dear Sam,

I have an innate suspicion of the results of web searches, particularly Wikipedia.
Since (I believe) the searches from AI combine the “internet” it is reasonable to expect the results to be suspect on a single search (as your results found).
I prefer to use a well researched and reliable site such as Encyclopaedia Britannica.
I ran searches on the smallest 10 countries in area on the globe, culminating in the following:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

“Here is a list of the smallest nations starting with the letter “A” by area:
1. Andorra: 181 square miles (468 square km)
2. Antigua and Barbuda: 171 square miles (442 square km)
3. Albania: 11,082 square miles (28,703 square km)
4. Armenia: 11,484 square miles (29,743 square km)
5. Austria: 32,383 square miles (83,871 square km)
6. Azerbaijan: 33,436 square miles (86,600 square km)
7. Afghanistan: 252,072 square miles (652,230 square km)
8. Algeria: 919,595 square miles (2,381,741 square km)
9. Argentina: 1,073,500 square miles (2,780,400 square km)
10. Australia: 2,968,000 square miles (7,692,024 square km)
Note: The list includes all countries starting with “A” from the search results, ordered by area from smallest to largest.”
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

The first 2 “A”s match your list, followed by the same third, but with a slightly different area.
Due to various climatic changes over time, the areas may well become out of date. The ‘land’ area may also be affected by the tidal height.

This was an interesting exercise. School homework seems more interesting when one is older!

Thanks for your various editorials. Always read with interest, even if I do not always agree entirely. Thought provoking, as intended.

Nice one Sam, just goes to show, lots of noise and fuss yet its still not truely correct … same goes for Wiki, anybody can dream stuff-up write it in the right place and ‘its gospel’
Could you ever beat DYOR.. best wishes mate

Anon

If various AI searches are already providing different results (some clearly more accurate than others!) then perhaps the sceptics may be right to be concerned about the future risks involved. Nobody really knows for sure what AI companies are already planning behind closed doors but errors could have drastic implications for the future of mankind.

Great article and use of simple examples to show the point in question!👍👍👍

The “countries starting with A” part could’ve been a lot more concise….
